In March of last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a series of changes to the nutrition facts label. In July of 2015 the FDA proposed further changes to the new label.
The first addition to the March 2014 proposal would add a percent daily value (%DV) for the added sugars category, which was one of the new changes from March. Prior to the new proposal, the %DV was only require for the total carbohydrates category.
The other change in the new proposal is to the footnote, which the FDA explained will help customers understand the concept of %DV. The new footnote will read, “The percent daily value (%DV) tells you how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a daily diet. 2,000 calories a day is use for general nutrition advice.”
The FDA originally proposed the changes to reflect new standards in public health concerns. In addition to the new added sugars category, the original proposed. Changes will increase the font for the number of servings per container and the number of calories per serving. Making those items more prominent on the label.
The %DV values will be the first thing listed on the left side. Of the label rather than being all the way to the right. In the vitamins and minerals section at the bottom. Food manufacturers will now be require to list the amount of Vitamin D. And potassium on all labels, in addition to the other items liste. Vitamins and minerals will now show their amounts rather than just the %DV for each listed item.
Serving sizes are another significant change. They will be list in common measurements first and then in metric ones, rather than metric only. What the FDA considers to be a serving will also change, so product packaging. May see the number of servings per container change based on the FDA’s proposal.
