Have a great product but not sure how to get it out to an audience? A unique website may offer just the solution you need.
Though it launched about a decade ago, Etsy has become increasingly popular in the last several years. It allows private entrepreneurs or business owners to sell their handmade or vintage goods online, opening up sales avenues that are virtually impossible in a brick and mortar store.
Though Etsy is a good tool to use, the influx of new users in recent years has made it more difficult to stand out. Here are some tips to make sure you get the most out of Etsy:
Be passionate about your product
Selling a product in any medium, but especially online, requires a lot of effort. It’s important, then, to be passionate about what you’re selling. Lacking a love for your product may end up rubbing customers the wrong way.
“I spent so much time my first year making items that weren’t something I really loved,” Etsy seller Ashley Aranda explaine to Business News Daily. “I had no enthusiasm for it, and it obviously showed. Once I switched to items that played off of my love … my shop really took off.”
Know your tax obligation
Filing taxes for a business can be a lot more complicated than filing for yourself. Get an idea ahead of time of what to expect by researching federal, state and local tax regulations and requirements prior to getting start.
Charge the right price
There are a number of factors to consider before deciding how much to charge. First, calculate your costs. How much does it cost to produce (consider both time and materials)? How much does it cost to ship to customers? Much is Etsy’s commission? Then, look on Etsy and elsewhere for similar products and see how much those cost. Lastly, decide on how much of a profit margin you want your product to have. Running all of those numbers should give you a good idea on what your price should be.
Create a shipping plan
As mentioned in the previous step, shipping costs should be consider when figuring out how much to charge for your product. There are many factors to consider in just this one aspect of the business. Make sure to account for travel time and costs to get to mail centers, as well as packaging and shipping costs. Plan all of this out ahea of time, so that you are surprise by anything at the post office.
Create a name
What are you going to call your product? If inspiration hasn’t already hit through the production process, develop something that reflects your product and passion for it. Also, with Etsy, you also have to create a shop name. This should be fun and unique as well. Before settling, do a quick search to make sure that there isn’t another, similarly name Etsy shop.
Be creative with your packaging.
Everyone loves getting a package. Make yours something fun and exciting, with a unique color logo that reflects your product and brand identity.
“Buyers shop small for a reason, so give them the personal touch they love about small business,” Etsy seller Joanne Halpin told Business Daily News.
